Academic Success Program
The Academic Success program is an academic coaching program for first and second year, pell-eligible students of color. The program was established in Fall 2019 under the Division of Diversity & Innovation, in collaboration with the Division of Academic Affairs. The program was created to address California State University’s ambitious Graduation Initiative 2025, to increase graduation rates for all CSU students while eliminating opportunity and achievement gaps.
Some of the biggest equity gaps in 6-year graduation rates that exist at San Diego State University are for Pell students who are Pacific Islander, Native American, Latinx, and Black. The Academic Success Program was created to provide academic case management and targeted interventions for these specific student populations to foster their academic success at SDSU.
Our program empowers students to achieve academic, personal, and professional success through comprehensive coaching services, financial assistance for basic needs, and workshops designed to develop the whole student. The program fosters a welcoming and affirming environment where students’ cultural identities and strengths are validated.
Academic Success Coaches
Student participants are paired with an Academic Success Coach who provide individual year-long support. Academic Success Coaches use intrusive advising techniques that capitalize on students' strengths and self-efficacy skills. Academic Success Coaches act as accountability partners for students, assess students’ needs, and refer students to on-campus resources.
Coaching sessions are designed to empower students to set personal and professional goals, create academic plans, and ideate solutions to overcome academic challenges. Students can schedule an appointment with their assigned Academic Success Coach through email or meet with any coach available during virtual drop-in coaching.
